Let’s Support the Restoration of Flood-Damaged Mosques and Madrassas, at Ramu village in Assam

As the floods in Assam continue to worsen, so does the scale of destruction. Homes have been washed away, trees uprooted, animals drowned, and the lives of thousands turned upside down. In some cases, the floods have even claimed lives. However, amid this devastation are stories that rarely make headlines but carry deep and lasting pain.

When Miles2Smile reached Assam to provide relief to flood-affected families, the team also set out to listen to the stories hidden beneath the disaster. Among the most overlooked were the stories of mosques and madrassas.

Inside the mosques, prayer carpets were soaked, torn, and swept away by the floodwaters. Copies of the Holy Quran and other religious books were damaged beyond use. Speakers and amplifiers stopped working after being submerged in water, while many ablution areas (Wazu Khanas) were left broken and destroyed.

The condition of the madrassas was equally heartbreaking. Books were soaked, their pages swollen and bindings damaged. Children’s uniforms were ruined and could no longer be worn. Inverters were permanently damaged due to water exposure, and the floor mats, much like those in the mosques, were torn, swollen, and left unusable.

The destruction of mosques and madrassas also brought daily prayers and children’s education to a standstill. Many communities were left without a place to worship, and hundreds of children lost their space to learn. With little hope of restoring these institutions on their own, their struggles remained largely unheard.

At Miles2Smile, we believe in answering every call of need, every requirement of relief. We believe in rebuilding their hopes and lives. To do so, we plan to put the following back in mosques and madrasas:

  • Saf Carpets (prayer carpets) for prayers at two mosques.
  • Ablution block (Wazu Khana) at mosques
  • Amplifiers at Mosques
  • Interveners at Mosques and Madrassas
  • Quran and other books at madrassas and mosques
  • Uniforms for Madrassa students

The essentials listed above may not erase all the hardships these communities have endured, but they will go a long way in helping mosques and madrassas resume prayers and education.

The abovementioned essentials might not end their struggles, but they would for sure lessen them extensively, but for that we need Rs. 2,40,000.  Let’s together come forward and help them walk on the path of recovery. Let’s come together and answer their unheard questions.
