For Sweety Bibi, coming home was supposed to mean the end of a nightmare. But more than a year after she was forcibly pushed across the border with her children, the fear has not left her.

She spent ten terrifying days in an unfamiliar forest, without adequate food or water, walking barefoot through thorns, crossing streams and carrying her children, not knowing whether they would survive or ever find their way back home. She was eventually detained and sent to a jail in Bangladesh before a long legal battle finally paved the way for her return to India.

Today, Sweety is back in her village. But she is still afraid. She rarely steps outside her home, fearing that she may once again be taken away.

When we met her this week, we could see that what she needs is not merely temporary relief. She needs a place she can truly call her own—a small piece of land where she and her children can live without the constant fear of being uprooted again.
